Lammerskraal Stud’s resident sire Go Deputy rounded off his season on a high when his son Gogetthesheriff showed grit and determination to win the R100 000 Friendly City Stakes run over 1900m on the Fairview polytrack on Friday.
Trained by Jacques Strydom, the winner showed his versatility with a variation on his usual racing style. He tracked the pacesetting Blaze Of Fire the whole way around and then bounced clear down the outside at the 300m under ‘super sub’ Raymond Danielson, to beat the favourite Kalamain in the non black-type feature.
Danielson replaced the stood-down Andrew Fortune, who is apparently suffering from a sore back, and rode a well-judged race to hold an unlikely edge all the way into the final stages.
The fancied Kalamain had come from some way off the gallop and was pointed down the inside of the track by Greg Cheyne, in what looked a match-winning move.
But the gelding had no answers to Gogetthesheriff’s superior enthusiasm and tenacity late on and the Strydom runner went on best to win by 0,75 lengths in a time of 116,43 secs.
Kalamain maintained his consistency in second, while Blaze Of Fire, a now 7yo entire, stayed on well for third.
The winner was bred by Lammerskraal and is out of the seven-time winning Centenary mare, Trojan Belle.
Relatively lightly raced, he has won 5 of 20 starts with 8 places and R327 300 in stakes. He won once from eight starts when originally trained by Mike De Kock.
His sire, Go Deputy, a son of Deputy Minister has had just nine two-year-old runners this term, and eight of these have either won or finished in the money. He really has caught the eye of those of us who watch racing on a regular basis.
Go Deputy’s winning juveniles include the undefeated Listed Devon Air Stakes heroine Flying Ice, as well as the eye catching debut winner Abashiri. Another Go Deputy sired juvenile to impress was Rap Attack, who romped home to win by three lengths at his second start..
Go Deputy is represented in Saturday’s G1 Thekwini Stakes with Flying Ice and in the Gr1 Premier’s Champion Stakes with impressive Azzie debut winner, Abashiri –a remarkable achievement for such a classically bred and performed stallion.
His latest juvenile winner to impress was the Sandown Stud bred Royal Badge, who made a winning debut over 1200m at Kenilworth last Saturday.
Go Deputy’s other notable winners this season include the talented filly Deputy Ryder, winner of four of her last five outings including the Queen Palm Stakes.
